About New England Wolf Advocacy and Rescue Center

NEWARC was formed in 2013 out of the need to protect the wolves and wolfdogs in New Hampshire. The Lockwood Animal Rescue Center (LARC) was called to assist two failing sanctuaries in New Hampshire by the Global Federation of Sanctuaries, the ASPCA, by local government officials, and personal requests by citizens who were worried about the wolves and wolfdogs at both sites.

The first solution was to ship some of the wolves and wolfdogs to different sanctuaries across North America for protection. This solution meant that many non-profits across the United States would fill their enclosures from these two failing organizations and that this influx of animals would cripple the already strained wolf and wolfdog nationwide network. The second solution was for LARC to take 20 to 30 animals to California to our state-of-the-art facility. This, like option one, would limit LARC’s ability for future rescue efforts and also place a severe strain on the older animals, the sick animals, and end up leaving animals behind. This solution was therefore not one we wanted to pursue.

LARC then came up with a true solution forming NEWARC. By forming NEWARC, all of the older animals could stay in their enclosures, sick animals could be given prolonged medical treatment, and the wolves and wolfdogs from the second facility could be transferred to the first. With funds from GFAS, ASPCA, and private donors, LARC formed NEWARC, sent out 4 trained staff members, and started building state- of-the-art enclosures.

NEWARC was the solution: no strain put on the wolf and wolfdog network, no animals had to be left behind, and a new resource was born for the wolf and wolfdog community. With funds from GFAS, ASPCA, and private donors, LARC formed NEWARC, sent out 4 trained staff members, and started building state- of-the-art enclosures.
